WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME CONSTITUTION
I. NAME
The name shall be the Western Carolina University Athletic Hall of Fame.
II. PURPOSE
The purpose and aim of the WCU Hall of Fame will be to recognize and honor those persons whose outstanding contributions have enriched the athletic program of Western Carolina Unversity; to provide an enduring memorial and preserve for posterity the memories of those persons whose endeavors brought fame to the University.
III. MEMBERSHIP
The membership of the committee shall be composed of the following:
1. WCU Director of Athletics (non-voting)
2. Executive Director, Catamount Club (voting)
3. Alumni Association President (voting)
4. Catamount Club President (voting)
5. Chairman, Faculty Athletic Committee (voting)
6. WCU Director of Sports Information
7. A representative from the Media (voting) - This shall be a four-year appointment - a new member can be appointed at the end of a three-year period or the current member can be reappointed.
8. Four year members of the Catamount Athletes Association. These initial members will be on a rotating basis with one-year, two-year, three-year and four-year terms. Each future representative of the Catamount Athletes Association will serve a four-year term. This selection to the committee will occur at the Athletes Association Breakfast during the Hall of Fame weekend.
IV. OFFICERS
The committee shall elect a chairperson and recording secretary at the time the committee deems appropriate.
V. NOMINATION PROCEDURES
1. Request for nominations will be sent to the following:
A. Cats W Club Members
B. Catamount Club members via the email website
C. Residents in the region via newspapers
D. University personnel via email
2. Nomination forms will be available from the Athletic Department, but nominations can be made without this form. A copy of the nomination form is attached.
3. The nominations shall be sent to the following address: WCU Hall of Fame Athletic Department Western Carolina University Cullowhee, NC 28723
VI. METHODS OF SELECTION
1. The Hall of Fame Committee shall accept nominations until January 31 of each year.
2. The committee will make selections for induction into the Hall of Fame by April 1 of each year.
3. The Sports Information Director will be responsible for verifying the data received on the nominees.
4. Copies of the information on each nominee will be sent to the committee members prior to the selection meeting.
5. The committee will decide on a year-to-year basis the number of inductees to be honored.
VII. CRITERIA FOR SELECTION OF INDUCTEES
1. The nominee must have distinguished himself/herself through outstanding contributions while representing Western Carolina University as a student-athlete, coach or associate of the Athletic Department.
2. The inductee must have given outstanding contributions which have enriched the athletic program.
3. Five (5) years must have elapsed since the student-athletes participated at the University or since the association with the Athletic Department has ended.
4. A posthumous awardee will be exempt from the five (5) year rule.
5. There will be ten (10) voting members of the committee. The Athletic Director and the recording secretary will be non-voting members. If the recording secretary is chosen from the voting membership, the secretary will retain the rights of a voting member.
6. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame, a nominee must receive seven (7) out of the ten (10) possible votes.
7. All inductees will be subject to final review and approval by the Chancellor of Western Carolina University.
8. If an inductee or appropriate representative cannot be present, at the request of the inductee or representative, the induction shall be postponed until the following year.
VIII. FUNDING
The funding will be generated from activities sponsored by the WCU Development Foundation with perpetual support from the sale of tickets for the Hall of Fame luncheon.
IX. PRESENTATION
1. The individuals to be honored will be inducted into the Hall of Fame each fall. A football game will be designated as a Hall of Fame game each year and the Athletic Director will recommend the game with final approval by the Hall of Fame Committee.
2. A plaque will be displayed on the Ramsey Center Concourse at the designated Hall of Fame area for each inductee.
3. A plaque will be presented to the inductee, family members or designated individual at the Hall of Fame luncheon on Saturday of the Hall of Fame weekend.
4. The inductees will be honored during half-time of the football game on the Hall of Fame weekend.
5. Complimentary tickets will be provided for various functions to the inductee and his/her immediate family or to the individual(s) designated to accept the award.
X. PUBLICITY
The Sports Information Director and Public Information Office personnel will be responsible for publicizing the requests for nominations and the announcements concerning the inductees.
XI. AMENDEMENTS
Amendements can only be made to this constitution by a majority vote of the Hall of Fame Committee.
