Former Catamount Jared Greenwood Signs With Yankees

June 14, 2005

Cullowhee, N.C. - Jared Greenwood, who wrapped up his collegiate baseball career at Western Carolina this past month, has signed as a free agent with the New York Yankees. The Franklin, N.C., native is currently in Tampa, Fla., for mini camp and should be assigned to a minor league team before the start of next week.

"I am tickled to death to get an opportunity to go on with my baseball career," Greenwood said. "The past few days in Tampa have been great and the Yankees are a first class organization. It has been everything I'd hoped for so far."

Greenwood had an excellent season in 2004, leading the Southern Conference and ranking sixth nationally in home runs (21 total/0.36 per game). For that, he was recognized with numerous preseason honors prior to the 2005 season such as being on the Johnny Bench watch list as one of the nation's top catchers, being tabbed second team All-American by Collegiate Baseball, being named one of the "Fab 50" seniors in the nation by Baseball America and being selected second team All-SoCon by the leagues coaches.

For his senior season with the Catamounts, Greenwood ranked third in the NCAA (through June 6) and first SoCon in drawing 54 walks (0.98 per game) this season. Also, his total of 54 walks ranked ninth on the SoCon single-season list and fifth on the WCU single-season list. Greenwood reached base by either hit or walk in 54 of his 55 games this season for a .462 on-base percentage to rank 11th in the SoCon. By reaching base so much, he ranked ninth in the SoCon with 57 runs scored.
